Awareness of the impacts related to organisation and management of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and the challenges that their implementation entails, require the adoption of a realistic, concrete and progressive approach to environmental and social sustainability, in which all stakeholders are involved.

The Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Milan Cortina 2026 aim to contribute to a new image of Italian beauty, which can also embody the urgency of today's social, territorial and cultural transformation. This is a heritage to draw on, in which to find a new creative potential, a new Italian spirit.

The Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Milan Cortina 2026 represent a unique opportunity to mobilise not only the entire country but also a global audience through the values of sport, inspiring tangible actions aimed at greater sustainability; a collective commitment to safeguarding the future of the planet and its beauty.

The Milan Cortina 2026 Strategy includes 5 main areas in the area of Sustainability and Legacy, each of which develops specific Objectives and Lines of Action:
1.    - Climate change and natural ecosystems

- Maximum possible reduction of emissions under direct control
- 100% offsetting of residual emissions under direct control
- Involvement in emission reduction/offsetting of all Contributing Partners
- Support for the climate resilience of communities in the territories
- Impact minimisation for local natural ecosystems


2.    - Circular economy
- Maximising circular solutions for temporary infrastructure and assets.
- Improving supply chain sustainability performance.
- Optimal management of waste resources and water savings


3.    - Human rights, gender equality, inclusion and accessibility

- Respect for human rights and equal opportunities throughout the Games
- Raising awareness of gender inclusion and equality by creating a discrimination-free environment
- Promotion of best safeguarding practices (protection against abuse and mistreatment)


4.    - Sports and wellness: More movement for everyone

- Support for future generations (6-18 year olds) through specific projects to increase sports practice
- Promotion of universal accessibility to winter disciplines for people with disabilities


5.    - Sustainable local economic development

- Counteracting the depopulation of mountain areas
- Involvement of companies with positive social impact objectives
- Support for the increase and creation of new skills in the management of sporting events
