The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Organising Committee of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games held a press conference at the Palazzo Grandi Stazioni in Venice at the end of the fifth meeting of the IOC Coordination Commission.
Fiames appears to be the most suitable venue to host the Olympic Village of Cortina. This recommendation was presented at the steering committee meeting on the Olympic infrastructure works. It emerged from a technical report that examined the different Cortina sites where it was conceivable to host the village.
Press release no. 640 of 12 April 2023.
The collaboration agreement between the Organising Committee of the 2026 Games and Fondazione Cortina has been signed. Fondazione Cortina will be the operational arm that will develop, together with the Organising Committee of the Games, projects on the territory to prepare for the Olympics. Stress tests in the management of major sporting events in the area were passed this winter, with the organisation of the Alpine Skiing World Championships and the Paralympic competitions – the 2026 Games will be the first widespread, accessible and sustainable Olympics.
Today the Fondazione Cortina was officially established, the territorial operational arm of the 2026 Olympics and the result of strong cohesion between various entities: the Veneto Region, the municipality of Cortina d'Ampezzo and the Province of Belluno. Fondazione Cortina is a truly local organising committee, composed entirely of Venetian members, which will have to organise and promote activities, events, and any other initiative that can form part of an overall framework for the development and enhancement of our Region.
The Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility, the Lombardy and Veneto Regions and the Autonomous Provinces of Bolzano and Trento sign the contract for establishment of Società Infrastrutture Milano Cortina 2026 S.p.A. in Rome (SIMICO S.p.A.).
The Company will carry out all the construction activities, as a central purchasing and contracting body, also stipulating agreements with other contracting authorities, for works related to the staging of the XXV Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2026.
The Olympic Delivery Guarantee and Legality Commission is officially established, an advisory and control body established by the Region to support the administrative activity of regional competence, concerning the organisation of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Committee reinforces the monitoring activity already initiated by the regional administration to ensure compliance with all obligations set out in the Three-Year Plan for the Prevention of Corruption and Transparency and compliance with the provisions of the Legality Protocol, with the aim of preventing any type of phenomenon linked to corruption and undue interference in the management of public affairs.
Today, two important pieces are added to the organisational machine, which continues to operate despite the pandemic, with the approval of the revision of the 2020/2026 Business Plan and the 2021 Budget, and the appointment of Thanos Kostopoulos, a key figure in the 2026 Winter Paralympic Games.
This morning, the Milano-Cortina team approved the marketing plan, the initial document of the Foundation that contains the marketing and operating policies. Each year, the Business Plan will be revised in the run-up to 2026, the next milestone in the project of Cortina and Milan as the venue for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Venetian Council, on the proposal of the Councillor for territory and sport, and in consultation with colleagues in infrastructure and public works and tourism and promotion, approved a resolution with which the territorial and urban coordination of the initiatives planned for the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games is activated, through a "masterplan" containing all projects of regional interest.
Today, news of the final approval from Parliament arrived with the favourable and definitive vote (225 yes and only one abstention) of the Senate on the decree-law regarding staging of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics, the final piece necessary to begin a great adventure in practical terms.
The President of the Veneto Region, Luca Zaia, spoke today in Tokyo at the IOC Olympic Committees assembly, to present and support the bid of Milan and Cortina to host the 2026 Winter Olympics. "Cortina, the ‘Queen of the Dolomites’, is the only Italian resort included in the ‘Best of the Alps’ ranking of the 12 most beautiful mountain resorts in the Alps” he reminded those present. “With Milan, we are proposing the Dolomites, one of the largest and most efficient skiing hubs in the world, which offers the perfect balance between environment and development".
Luca Zaia (President of the Veneto Region), Attilio Fontana (President of the Lombardy Region), Giuseppe Sala (Mayor of Milan), and Gianpietro Ghedina (Mayor of Cortina), met today at the headquarters of the Venetian Council in Venice for a collective assessment of the actions to be taken and to officially launch the "Venetian Lombard" bid to host the 2026 Winter Olympic Games. This edition will also take place in the 70th anniversary year of the 1956 Cortina Olympics. The dossier being prepared will have to respond comprehensively to a set of 132 specific questions put forward by the IOC.
