What is the Olympic Truce

The first Olympic Truce (Ekecheiria) was signed in Greece in 776 BC to allow the Olympic Games to take place between cities often at war with each other. The sanctuary of Olympia and the Elis region obtained a de facto immunity that allowed athletes and spectators to reach Olympia and participate in the Games without having to fear for their safety.

The concept of the Olympic Truce was revived in 1991: the sanctions enacted following the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia included (for the first time) sport, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) stepped forward to negotiate with the UN to aid participation of athletes in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.

Since 1993, the UN has continued to support the IOC, and every two years the General Assembly adopts the resolution: "Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal".

The symbols of the Olympic Truce

In each edition, the mural of the Olympic Truce provides a platform through which all participants, and in particular the athletes, can show their support for the principles of the Olympic Truce.
Due to the particularity of the widespread venues where the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will take place, several murals will be set up at the Olympic Villages and venues will be selected for the signature of high-profile athletes and personalities.
