In the context of the activities of the Venice World Sustainability Capital Foundation, the Veneto Region is entrusted with the task of coordinating, among others, the meetings relating to the "Energy Transition and the Environment" Focus Group, through the Territorial Protection and Security Area.
Among the first activities of the Focus Group, during 2022, a shared programming document was defined, in which some priority strategies were identified and separated into objectives and actions, on which a discussion was subsequently opened between the members for achievement of the macro objectives that the Foundation has set itself since its establishment.
Following the appointment of the Foundation's administrative bodies, as well as the subsequent affiliation of a large number of co-founding members, in consideration of the complexity and scope of the issues dealt with in the "Energy Transition and Environment" Focus Group, it was decided, in agreement with the members, to divide activities into the following three sub-areas:
- Circular economy and environmental protection: among the objectives, the protection and preservation of the lagoon environment through interventions aimed at reducing sources of anthropic pressure, increasing the efficiency of the municipal waste collection and transport system, and the strengthening of recycling collection, also regarding marine debris
- Energy efficiency and renewable energies: among the objectives, the construction of plants for production, storage and distribution of energy from renewable sources, the energy transition and decarbonisation of public and private heating systems in the historic city, support for energy communities
- Sustainable mobility and infrastructure: among the objectives are the decarbonisation of the fleet of boats and vehicles in the metropolitan city of Venice and the decarbonisation of infrastructures present in the metropolitan city of Venice.
For each of the thematic sub-areas, specific meetings were held in the form of "Workshops", aimed at realisation of individual projects, enhancing the potential that the Venice World Sustainability Capital Foundation expresses in promoting and facilitating synergies between members, with the shared objective of carrying out activities that promote a sustainability model for Venice and its territory.
